"I loved life, and the loss of my feet has not hindered me."
Cecil McMorris, Founder
Our 60+ Year History
Cecil McMorris founded Lubbock Artificial Limb & Brace and passed the business down to his children and grandchildren, who carry on his legacy today. After becoming a double-amputee following the Korean War, he once said, "I loved life, and the loss of my feet has not hindered me."
That sentiment is one we hope every patient of Lubbock Artificial Limb & Brace can share with our late founder.

Cecil's Harrowing Story
At the age of 16, Cecil, who was quite restless, lied about his age to join the army. When he learned he would be sent to Korea, he asked his dad to help him get out of it. In an attempt to teach him a lesson, Cecil's dad refused, hoping his son would gain some perspective on life. Cecil, nor his father, knew at the time the impact that decision would have on amputees' lives more than 60 years later.
During the battle of the Chosin Reservoir, considered one of the greatest defeats of the US Army in history, Cecil was captured, shot, and left for dead—twice. He survived for nearly a week in a small boat on the reservoir. His wounds froze, preventing him from bleeding to death, but he lost both of his legs.
The Start of Lubbock Artificial Limb & Brace
After Cecil was rescued, he recovered in Germany before returning to Texas. A small prosthetics shop in Lubbock was about to close, so in 1962 Cecil bought it and renamed it Lubbock Artificial Limb & Brace. Abilene Artificial Limb was opened in 1981 by Kent and Sheila Phillips, Cecil's son-in-law and daughter. Cecil's grandson, Jason, joined the company in 1996, and he continues to own and operate it today.
In the early days, limbs were made of wood, metal, and simple mechanical devices. Today, with the rise of high-tech materials and computerized microprocessors, the company has evolved to provide the utmost comfort and functionality for our patients. Though the business has grown and changed over 60 years, the family at the helm remains steadfast in its commitment to Cecil’s vision: caring for amputees and helping them actively live their lives.
